Electrokinetically Enhanced Remediation of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds in Soils: A Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Electrokinetically enhanced remediation is an innovative technology that has the potential to remediate hydrophobic organic compound (HOC) contamination in soils and groundwater. A surfactant/cosolvent is used to increase HOC desorption and solubilization, and an applied electric potential facilitates contaminant transport primarily by electroosmosis and/or electrophoresis. Electroosmotic flow generally improves soil–solution–contaminant interaction, especially in zones of high organic content and/or low hydraulic conductivity. The electrokinetically enhanced remediation process is fairly simple to implement and operate, but the fundamental reactions that govern the remediation method are complex. An adequate knowledge of the contaminant transport mechanisms and the physical, chemical, and electrochemical processes is essential in order to optimize system performance. This article reviews previous research efforts on HOC remediation and the use of in situ flushing and electrokinetics for organic contaminants. In addition, to gain a better understanding of the individual components and the complexities of the electrokinetically enhanced in situ flushing process, this article presents background information on HOCs and surfactants/cosolvents, as well as the basic parameters that affect the performance of in situ flushing and electrokinetic technologies. Since the success or failure of electrokinetic remediation for HOC pollutants in low permeability soils largely depends

Remediation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Soils by Nonionic Surfactants: Column Experiments
Using flushing solutions with different nonionic surfactants, this study investigated the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated soils with different organic carbon contents. Naphthalene and anthracene are the two delegates of PAHs used in the study. Contaminated soil packed in a stainless-steel column was continuously flushed with a surfactant solution at room temper...
متن کاملBiosurfactants are useful tools for the bioremediation of contaminated soil: a review
Bioremediation processes are negatively affected by the low aqueous solubility of some contaminants; therefore their bioavailability may be enhanced by the addition of surfactants. These compounds are organic molecules that can be chemically and biologically produced. Surfactants contain both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, therefore reducing surface and interfacial tensions of immiscible f...

The influence of pH on the sorption of pentachlorophenol (PCP) onto three organic amendments, char, humic acid (HA) and peat, and the effect of organic amendments on PCP sorption to three kinds of soils were evaluated. The sorption of PCP on these sorbents fitted the Freundlich model well, suggesting that PCP sorption isotherms were nonlinear with exponential coefficient (N) value lower than 1....

متن کاملSorption of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds on Natural Sorbents and Organoclays from Aqueous and Non-Aqueous Solutions: A Mini-Review
Renewed focus on the sorption of hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) onto mineral surfaces and soil components is required due to the increased and wider range of organic pollutants being released into the environment. This mini-review examines the possibility of the contribution and mechanism of HOC sorption onto clay mineral sorbents such as kaolinite, and soil organic matter and the possibl...
